All About Mr. Holt
Hi, my name is Sam Holt. This year will be my first full year at South Mecklenburg High School and my thirty-seventh year as a teacher in North Carolina Public Schools. After graduating from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, I taught sixth grade Language Arts for two years in Clayton, N.C., before accepting a position teaching in Wake County Schools where I taught English at Athen's Drive High School and a few years later at Enloe Magnet High School. My wife and I moved to the Charlotte region in the mid-eighties. I taught English at Albemarle High School for fourteen years and later moved to Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord where I taught all levels of English including A.P. Literature and Composition. Through the years I have had the opportunity to work with many students whose first language was not English, so I became certified in English as a Second Language and taught ESL in Iredell and Cabarrus Counties. I consider myself to be fortunate to have had so many enjoyable teaching experiences through the years. I hope my students have learned as much from me as I have learned from them!
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a musician. As a student at N.C. State, I took organ lessons at Meredith College. To help pay for college, I began playing the organ for church worship services. I enjoyed this experience so much that I have continued to play since college. Currently I am organist and music director at Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesville. Between my two career, I spend lots of time working in my yard and learning to play the cello (Old dogs can learn new tricks!).
I have taught in many schools during my career, but I must say that South Mecklenburg High School is one of the best schools I have ever had the opportunity to serve. I look forward to another great year!
